James H. VanSteenhouse is a mortgage industry powerhouse, contributing more than 20 years of expertise to InterLinc. Jim held the role of CEO from 2010-2020, and throughout that time, the company grew to more than 400 employees and has been recognized on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America. VanSteenhouse and his leadership achieved this success by ensuring that InterLinc’s mortgage professionals are equipped with the necessary tools needed to provide customers with low-interest rates, quality service and closings that are always “On Time and as Agreed".
“I am grateful for the fact I had the opportunity to build an organization around people who inspire me daily. We have hired people who absolutely love what they do and it shows,” said VanSteenhouse.
Along with serving as current Chariman of the Board, VanSteenhouse speaks across the country, inspiring people with his “Bear Man” story of how he survived a vicious grizzly bear attack in September 2015. Jim is married with 3 children (2 sons & 1 daughter). In his free time Jim loves hunting and most importantly loves spending time with his family.
As President and CEO, Gene Thompson brings a dynamic combination of sales, real estate and mortgage experience to InterLinc. His many years in the mortgage banking industry, combined with his dynamic approach to sales and operations, has brought the organization unprecedented growth opportunities. The long-lasting relationships that he’s built with builders and Realtors® over the years have enabled InterLinc to become a powerhouse in the mortgage industry.
“What stands out the most about InterLinc is the culture. Great leadership and great vision would be nothing without great people,” said Thompson.
Thompson graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a major in Accounting and minor in Finance. He has been married for 21 years and has two children. Outside of work Thompson can be found hunting, fishing or spending time with his family.
David Scheiderich leverages his more than 25 years of experience in mortgage banking to oversee all financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, servicing and warehouse lending at InterLinc. Since joining the team in October 2015, he has been integral to the company’s growth by maximizing profits, managing expenses, and identifying shortfalls inside the organization.
When asked why he’s passionate about the mortgage industry, Scheiderich said, “I get to be a part of a business that helps individuals achieve the American dream of owning a home.”
Scheiderich has been married for 25 years and has two children, a 24-year old daughter and 22-year old son. He enjoys spending time with family, fishing and golfing in his time outside of work.
With over a decade of experience in the mortgage industry, Brian Gapen oversees the operations of the company with responsibilities that include Underwriting, Closing, Post Closing, IT, HR and executive oversight of Compliance/QC.
“InterLinc is special to me because it’s a place where you can collaborate and make a difference,” said Gapen.
Gapen is married with three children and five grandchildren. Spending time at his lake house is his favorite way to enjoy his time outside of work.
Jason Baker oversees the secondary and Capital Markets' efforts of the organization, including: investor relations, loan trading, hedging, pricing strategies, product development, and servicing. Prior to joining InterLinc, Baker held positions at New Century, Aegis, IndyMac Bank and CrossLand Mortgage Corporation.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Utah State University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. In 2001, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management.
“I knew that I wanted to be a part of the vision Jim had for InterLinc,” said Baker.
Baker is married with four children. His hobbies include skiing, snowboarding, traveling and leading a Boy Scouts of America chapter as a scoutmaster.
With 16 years of experience in the mortgage industry, James Durham oversees branch performance, as well as recruitment and selection of future InterLinc team members. He attended Auburn University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Business and a minor in Finance.

Durham is married with three children. In his free time, he enjoys doing anything outdoors including wakeboarding, hunting, fishing, and exercising. He also loves spending quality time with his family.
