Baby gates are not just for toddlers, they’re also a huge help when you have animals in the house. Baby gates allow you to break your home up into spaces where you want your pet going and spaces you don’t. A good rule of thumb is to block off rooms that have carpet or breakable items.

Keep Doors Closed

For rooms that do have a door like a bathroom or bedroom, keep them closed! Closing the bathroom door will ensure that you don’t have a toilet water-drinking pup on your hands. If you like your pet to be able to go into your room, keep the door open! If you want your bedroom to be a pet-free space, make sure to close the door when you enter and exit.

Install Tile Flooring

Carpet is public enemy #1 for pet owners. Even if you have a fabulously trained pet, accidents still happen. To make sure you’re safe and not sorry, install tile flooring in rooms you know will be accessible to your pet. This way, an “oops!” moment doesn’t leave a permanent mark on your home. 

Match Décor to Your Pet’s Coat

If you’re really worried about pet hair lingering on every visible surface, take the time to think about your décor choices. Do you have dark furniture and a cat with white fur? Do you have a cream rug and a dog with a black coat? It may be worthwhile to invest in furniture pieces that match your pet’s fur so you avoid having to vacuum every 5 minutes.
